The best things to do in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of those cities that effortlessly blends history, culture, and a vibrant modern atmosphere. From its iconic canals and world-class museums to its incredible food scene, there’s something here for every type of traveller. Whether you’re visiting for a quick weekend break or a longer getaway, this guide covers some of the best things to do in Amsterdam to help you make the most of your trip.

1 - Canal Cruise

A canal cruise is one of the best ways to see Amsterdam, especially if you’re short on time. It’s a relaxing way to take in the city while learning about its history at the same time. We booked an unlimited drinks tour through Get Your Guide and, although I don’t drink alcohol myself, it’s great value if you do. The route covered many of the city’s most iconic canals, and the guide shared plenty of fun facts about the Netherlands along the way.

2 - Tony's Chocolonely

If you’re looking for a unique souvenir, Tony’s Chocolonely is a must-visit. You can create your own custom chocolate bar, although the queue can get quite long and you’ll need to return later to collect it. The waiting time varies, but ours was around an hour or two. We timed our visit before our canal cruise, which worked perfectly as our chocolate was ready by the time we finished. It’s conveniently located near Central Station, where many boat tours depart.

3 - Van Gogh Museum

As an art lover, the Van Gogh Museum was a non-negotiable for me. Amsterdam is packed with incredible museums, but if you’re limited on time, this is a fantastic choice. The museum offers a great balance of Van Gogh’s artwork and insights into his life, making it both visually inspiring and informative. You’ll also get the chance to see some of his most famous pieces, including Sunflowers.

4 - Enjoy some classic food

You can’t visit Amsterdam without trying Dutch pancakes and stroopwafels. They’re staples of the local food scene and absolutely worth it. If you’re a foodie like me, this city won’t disappoint - there’s something for everyone. Read my guide to eating in Amsterdam here.

5 - A'DAM Lookout

For something a little more adventurous, head to the A’DAM Lookout. The rooftop offers incredible panoramic views across the city, but the real highlight is the “Swing Over the Edge.” This giant swing sends you soaring back and forth over the side of the building - definitely not for the faint-hearted! We went at sunset, which made the experience even more special thanks to the stunning views.

6 - Tulip Experience Amsterdam

Finally, while it’s not technically in Amsterdam, the Tulip Experience Amsterdam is well worth a visit if you’re travelling in spring. It’s about 40 minutes from the city centre and just an 8-minute drive from the famous Keukenhof Gardens. What makes this experience unique is that you can actually walk through the tulip fields - something you can’t do at Keukenhof. There are plenty of fun photo opportunities with props, as well as a small museum where you can learn about the history of tulips in the Netherlands. There’s also a café on-site, and you even get a bouquet of tulips included with your ticket.

Amsterdam is a city that truly has it all - stunning scenery, rich history, and unforgettable experiences around every corner. Whether you’re cruising through the canals, admiring world-famous art, or indulging in sweet treats, it’s a destination that’s easy to fall in love with. No matter how long you spend here, you’ll leave already planning your next visit.
